To me, one of the most beneficial features of social media and the internet, in general, is the ability to explore a creative network. At the risk of sounding like a total millennial, I will share that I like to think about the days before the internet when someone’s world was created based on limited access to information and their location, how fascinating is that?! So in this way, I greatly enjoy taking advantage of all the tools I have at my fingertips to explore the world around me. This helps to curate an inspiring creative space for me so I wanted to share the wealth by beginning this blog series titled “Maker Spotlight”. The intent is to dedicate posts to makers or artists that I really dig in hopes of spreading their work to a larger audience. So here it goes…
I am dedicating this Maker Spotlight to Block Shop Textiles. I came across this company years ago when I was in school studying textile design and have been so in love ever since.
LA-based Block Shop Textiles was started by sister artist duo Hopie and Lily Stockman. After college, Lily had a year-long painting apprenticeship in Jaipur, which is where Block Shop products are now made. They began with a mission to “support and celebrate Indian hand block printing tradition”. The sisters began the company in 2013 and since then have spent two months out of every year in India researching and prototyping products with their team in Jaipur. Not only does the company produce the most beautifully designed textiles and prints, but they also do so in a way that honors and contributes to the community in Jaipur. “We believe in small-scale production, fair wages for workers, and healthy working conditions. We embrace a decentralized supply chain in order to support the small family business ecosystem in our partner communities in India.”, the sisters say.

Additionally, they invest a portion of their yearly profits into programs they have developed to help encourage community health and empowerment there in Jaipur. Basically they have nailed their business model and I am so in awe of what they do and how they do it!
